The “S” Word

I’ve heard it time and time again, the “s”word. Should is the “s” word that keeps us in perpetual failing because it is not based on reality. It often originates from expectations of ourselves that come from belief and not facts.

Definition:

  • used to say or ask what is the correct or best thing to do
  • used to show when something is likely or expected

In martial arts many of us say the “s” word a lot. We make statements like “I should be able to remember this Kata.”, even though the Kata has not been practiced. Or, “I should do well in this competition…” Even though attention to preparation was not paid.

At some point we have to look at ourselves and say why should I… especially if I don’t have facts to back up the expectations.
