To be Good Requires Strength

This statement moved me the first time I heard it. Until recently I had forgotten where that line came from. Good old YouTube to the rescue!! (One of the rare times I can say that without being sarcastic) Jordan B. Peterson was being interviewed by John Stossel??? Here is the short video:

You Learn to be dangerous

Interesting Jordan Peterson refers to Martial Artists.

How many people try to be “good”? They don’t cause any trouble and think that is being good. Usually these people are weak and don’t want any trouble. This is what society indirectly teaches: Be a good person. This is achieved by teaching people to be weak…. so you can be good. If you are weak (uneducated, physically unfit, overly emotional, distracted by social media, the news, etc) then you will be good because you won’t be able to do anything else.

The idea of being strong to be good isn’t taught. What would happen if everyone begins to realize only the strong (dangerous) have the option of being good? What does this mean? Think about it… if you were strong and someone told you to do something wrong, you can decide to tell them no. You would not be worried about them attacking you. You are strong. You can determine what your next step will be. If they threatened you, you can meet that threat.

Only the strong or dangerous can choose to be good. Sure, they also can choose to be bad. Isn’t that what makes super heroes noble? They have incredible strength and choose to do good. Almost all little boys wanted to grow up to be a hero: a fireman, policeman, soldier, comic book hero…. their dad… etc. They see that strength and think to do good with that strength.

Teach your children to be strong. Teach them to be wise, just and of good character. With the proper balance of strength and morals they become good people. Such people fight evil. Why would we want it any other way?
