Frame of Reference

I see a six.  You see a nine.  We are looking at the same figure.  A lot of our opinions depend on our frame of reference.

Over the past few years I have had the pleasant opportunity to be both a teacher and a student.  As a martial artist, I am having the time of my life!  Experiencing both has made me better at both.  Giving in to being a beginner allows me the freedom to be wrong.   The freedom to just be… as I don’t know what is right or wrong.  Just do what I am told.  I learn so much in this state of being.

The thought that woke me up this morning was giving thanks to my teachers.  If I did well, it is due to good teaching; receiving good information.  If I do poorly, it is because I didn’t practice correctly or enough. I am looking at a 6.

The other side of the coin as a teacher is seeing the 9.  If a student does poorly,  I have not taught correctly; passed on the correct information in a way they understand.  If a student does well, it is because of their effort and practice.

Both states of being exist at the same time: opposite sides if the same coin.  How I exist depends on where I am standing.  Do I see a 6 or a 9?  Both views are correct.  Expanding our frame of reference; gaining clarity and understanding, rather than being right. Learning to be both… harmony… yes it feels good!
