Hontai Yoshin Ryu: Introduction to Bojutsu Kihon

Welcome to the first in a series of workshops on Hontai Yoshin Ryu Kihon Waza (basic techniques). Hontai Yoshin Ryu (HYR) is an effective method of self-defense once used by Samurai, founded around 1635 near modern-day Tokyo, Japan. HYR is a koryu bujutsu (old or traditional) system that primarily teaches standing jujutsu forms in a Japanese style, and offers training in long sword (iaijutsu), six-foot staff (bojutsu), short sword (kodachijutsu), three-foot staff (hanbojutsu), knife techniques (tantojutsu), and jujutsu ground techniques (newaza).

Brian Barnes Sensei with Matthew Hawthorne

The primary instructor will be Dr. Brian Barnes Sensei. Barnes Sensei is a Kentucky native and lifelong educator who is (since 2016) the head instructor for Hontai Yoshin Ryu in The United States. Barnes Sensei began training in HYR in 1991 under Dr. Stephen Fabian Sensei, and is fortunate to have trained directly with the18th and 19th Soke of Hontai Yoshin Ryu, along with many senior teachers over the decades. Beginning with a homestay in Japan in 1993, Barnes Sensei has traveled across the world to study the art and cultivate connections with international teachers, students, and friends of HYR.

This seminar introduces beginners to the basic techniques contained in Hontai Yoshin Ryu’s interpretation of Kukishin Ryu’s Bojutsu. Participants will engage with basic stances and individual techniques, learning their names and the particulars of this approach. Hand and foot movements within the logic of this system is a focus of our training, as is balance, breathing, and spirited cooperation with others. Participants will also learn a little of the history, vocabulary, and cultural context for this training. Finally, participants will be introduced to the teaching forms of the system, the paired kata, such that they can test themselves and others as they work to hone the skills of HYR’S Bojutsu.

This is a BYOB (Bring your own Bo) affair. We highly discourage the use of “tooth -pick” Bo as there will be plenty of Bo to Bo contact made. Nor should the Bo be too heavy which makes for a long, tiring session.  Bo will be available for purchase ($30), using the correct registration status if you are interested. The registration deadline with Bo purchase option is January 22, 2022 to allow sufficient time to order and receive them.

Thank you for joining us in this part of our Martial Arts Journey.  Hontai Yoshin Ryu is a vital part of our Karate training at our Dojo.
